Counterfactual Contamination

چکیده

Many defend the thesis that when someone knows p, they couldn’t easily have been wrong about p. But notion of easy possibility in play is relatively under-theorized. One structural idea literature, principle Counterfactual Closure (CC), connects with counterfactuals: if it could happened and p were case then q would be case, follows q. We first argue that, while CC false, there a true restriction to cases involving counterfactual dependence on coin flip. The failure falsifies model where possibilities are counterfactually similar actuality. Next, we show extant normality models, sufficiently normal ones, incompatible restricted flips. develop new kind theory can accommodate version CC. This introduces Contamination, which says, roughly, any world fairly abnormal at very events depend Finally, explain why flips other related special status. A central take-home lesson correct vicinity Safety importantly normality-theoretic rather than (as usually conceived) similarity-theoretic.

Counterfactual Predictions

The difficulties in properly anticipating key economic variables may encourage decision makers to rely on experts’ forecasts. The experts’ forecasts, however, may not be accurate. So, their forecasts must be empirically tested. This may induce experts to forecast strategically to pass the test. A test can be ignorantly passed if a false expert, with no knowledge of the data generating process, ...

Counterfactual computation

Suppose that we are given a quantum computer programmed ready to perform a computation if it is switched on. Counterfactual computation is a process by which the result of the computation may be learnt without actually running the computer. Such processes are possible within quantum physics and to achieve this e¬ect a computer embodying the possibility of running the computation must be availab...

Counterfactual thinking.

Counterfactuals are mental representations of alternatives to the past and produce consequences that are both beneficial and aversive to the individual. These apparently contradictory effects are integrated in a functionalist model of counterfactual thinking. The author reviews research in support of the assertions that (a) counterfactual thinking is activated automatically in response to negat...

Counterfactual Fairness

Machine learning has matured to the point to where it is now being considered to automate decisions in loan lending, employee hiring, and predictive policing. In many of these scenarios however, previous decisions have been made that are unfairly biased against certain subpopulations (e.g., those of a particular race, gender, or sexual orientation). Because this past data is often biased, machi...

Counterfactual scorekeeping

Orthodoxy has it that counterfactuals cannot be treated as strict conditionals. But there is a loophole: if the strictness is a function of context then maybe they can be so treated. I argue for a loophole analysis that treats ‘would’-counterfactuals as strict conditionals that are duals to ‘might’counterfactuals. Most of the work lies in getting straight about the interaction between context a...
